How to access public record of a criminal case?

I am researching a series of crimes in California that occurred in the early 1970s and need to access all records available, including autopsies, trial transcripts, etc, etc. The person who committed those crimes got life in prison and he is still alive. How can I do that? Even if I have to pay, do I have a legal way of requesting all relevant doents?
