How many are there different types of internal hard drives, Which type to buy to fit my desktop?

I just bought a Western Digital WD800JBDTL Caviar SE 80 GB ATA-100 Internal Hard Drive. And I could not plug it in with my HP because the back of the hard drive (for the prongs to plug in) is different than my old broken Gateway hard drive.
