Kerry wanted McCain as his VP, and now Repubs want him as Pres. Why does McCains appeal extend to liberals?

Because of McCain's self promotion as a bipartisan maverick. Unfortunately, he isn't. If you check his voting record, he votes almost 99% along party lines and has pretty much supported every hare brained Bush policy.
