How to determine if a waterway was used to float timber to the mills back when this was done?

Local newspaper archives are useful. Also the U.S. Forestry Service may have data on waterways used to float logs to the mills. Almost any river deep enough with adequate flow would have been used as it was an inexpensive method of transport.
